• New Year Day – 1st Jan, 2016
On 1st of January every year, the government declares New Year’s day as a public holiday. Hence, all those who party hard on the night of 31st can sleep till late and have more fun the entire day. The first day of the New Year is usually a public holiday across the globe, where Gregorian calendar is followed.
• Chinese New Year – 8th & 9th Feb, 2016
It’s a National holiday, celebrated on the 8th and 9th of February. Chinese New Year is very much like the Western new year, but it is filled with rituals and traditions and is observed very keenly, from food to clothing, everything is just set accordingly. As per the Chinese calendar, every year is symbolized by one of the 12 animals according to the Chinese Zodiac. The year 2016 will be represented by the Monkey. Its celebration lasts for 15 days and is also renowned as the Spring Festival.

• Declaration of Malacca as a Historical City – 15th April, 2016
Melaka public holidays also include 15th of April, as on this date Malacca was declared as a historical city by UNESCO. On the 7th of July 2008, Melaka was listed as the UNESCO world heritage site. This marks an important day in the history of Melaka and therefore, the Government announces public holiday every year.
• Labor Day – 2nd May, 2016
Labor Day is observed as a commemoration of the achievements of labors, across the globe. It is not only one of the Melaka public holidays, but the government of a large number of countries has marked this day as a public holiday i.e. 1st of May. As this year 1st May will fall on Sunday, so the government has announced Monday i.e. 2nd of May as a public holiday.
• Wesak Day – 21st May, 2016
Wesak Day is observed as a holy day and one of the major festivals of Malaysia. Therefore, not only in Melaka, but across the country public holiday is observed. Basically, when the Sunday is near to full moon in the month of May, Buddha’s birthday is celebrated every year. Therefore, the exact date is not same and hence, varies country to country. It is one of the holiest day, as per the calendar of Buddhist community. This year it is expected to be on 21st of May 2016.
• King’s Birthday – 4th June, 2016
On the 1st Saturday of every June, the King SPB Yang di Pertuan Agong birthday is celebrated across Malaysia. This year it will be celebrated on the 4th of June 2016. This event comes with a series of ceremonies and events, which are held in Kuala Lumpur. Military band present rousing performance and ceremonial Trooping of the colors is presented during the events. A pledge of loyalty is presented by the Malaysian Armed Forces to the King of Malaysia. • 1st Ramadan – 6th June, 2016
It has been anticipated that 6th of June will mark the 1st day of Ramadan, as per the Muslim calendar, hence, it will be an official off observed in Melaka. • Hari Raya Aidilfitri – 6th & 7th July, 2016
Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated not only in Malaysia, but across the world by Muslims. It is celebrated right after the holy month of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast. The government has marked this celebration and hence, it is one of the Melaka public holidays observed every year. This year it will be celebrated as per the moon sighting from 6th of July to 7th of July 2016. Citizens are provided 2 days off for the celebration of this occasion. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a reward for Muslims on successfully fasting the entire month and for keeping themselves safe from committing sins.
• Malaysian Independence Day – 31st Aug, 2016
Not only Melaka public holidays include 31st of August as an official off, but it is marked off across Malaysia. This is because, this was one of the biggest day for Malaysia, when it achieved independence from British colonial rule in 1957. The Malaysian independence day is also called Merdeka Day i.e. Freedom Day and hence, is the Malaysia’s National Day.
On the independence day, the entire country is decorated with flags and glowing lights. In the morning at the Merdeka Square the official celebration begins with spectacular parade, in the presence of His Majesty the King and Government officials, along with the general public.
• Hari Raya Haji – 12th Sep, 2016
Melaka public holidays include official holidays, marked by the Government of Malaysia for the entire country citizens. Similarly, Hari Raya Haji i.e. Eid ul Adha is celebrated by the Muslims in Malaysia as well as around the world with zest and zeal. This year as per the moon sightings it will be celebrated here on the 12th of September 2016.
On every 10th of Dzulhijjah month, as per the Muslim calendar, this occasion is celebrated in the memory of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice for the happiness of ALLAH that included his son as well. Muslims sacrifice their beloved animals, as per guided in their religion and a major share of the meat is equally distributed among relatives, neighbors, underprivileged and others.
• Malaysia Day – 16th Sep, 2016
Malaysia Day is also known as Hari Day, which is celebrated every year on 16th of September every year. It is celebrated on the commemoration of the day, when East Malayan states and former British colonial joined together for the creation of Malaysia.
Malaysia Day is being celebrated as the national off from the year 2010. When this holiday was announced by the Prime Minister of that time, he also added that activities that represent the Malaysian spirit should be conducted on this day, along with formal events like parade and etc. He said that this will help people in remembering the hard work of their ancestors in the attainment of independence. This day is also on the list of official Melaka public holidays.
• Awal Moharram – 2nd Oct, 2016
Awal Moharram means the first day of the Muslim New Year. Moharram is the name of the month and awal means first. This day is celebrated by the Muslims and hence, many follow the tradition of cooking delicious food and sweets, which is being distributed among Muslims and poor. This year as per the moon sighting, it will be celebrated on the 2nd of October 2016 in Melaka.
• Malacca Governor’s Birthday – 14th Oct, 2016
On the 14th of October every year Malacca Governenor’s birthday is celebrated. It is one of Melaka public holidays, which is only observed in the city of Malacca.
• Diwali/Deepavali – 29th Oct, 2016
The Hindu festival of lights i.e. Diwali/Deepavali is celebrated in many countries across the globe. Hindus all over the world, celebrate this day as it marks the return of their religious person Lord Rama from an exile period of 14 years. This amazing festival of lights is celebrated in the month of Kartik, as per the Hindu calendar, which is the darkest and first night of the new moon. This year it will be celebrated on the 29th of October 2016 and there will be an off officially in Melaka on this day.
• Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday – 12th Dec, 2016
On the 12th of every Moharram, Muslims celebrate the birthday of their beloved Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H). Across Melaka, this day is officially off and Muslims prepare special sweets, which is then distributed among other Muslims. This day is also observed in other Muslim countries and an off is given to citizens by their respective government. As observation of many events among Muslims is based on the sighting of the moon, therefore, the dates vary as per English calendar. • Christmas Eve – 25th Dec, 2016
Christmas day is celebrated all over the world on every 25th of December as per the English calendar. Melaka public holidays also include this eve officially in the list and hence, a number of celebration activities is conducted across the city. A spirit of joy and happiness is found on the day among the people everywhere. This day is celebrated as the history reveals the birth of Jesus on the 25th of December.
